Ground Rules for Curriculum Revision Discussion

May 28th, 2015

Hi, all –

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I wanted to see if, before we get immersed in the details of curriculum revision, if there were some basic principles we could all agree on to guide us.  I came up with a list of my own, informed by my experience in the last revision which was very early in my career at Guilford. I’m sure many of you have deeper insight and more relevant experience, so feel free to propose additions, deletions, or edits. And also feel free to let me know if this is way out of line, or a stupid idea, because it may well be.

Anyway, here are some concepts I think might be useful for us all to consider:

  • My discipline is awesome.
  • My discipline will be awesome even if it’s not specifically represented in the general education curriculum.
  • The future of my department at the college does not depend on inclusion in the general education curriculum.
  • General education is not specific disciplines. General education is ideas and skills.
  • Whenever possible, we should give students as many choices as possible in how they receive the ideas and skills we think they need.
  • General education should be exciting, not a burden. Students should be clamoring to take their general education courses, not enduring them. Faculty should feel the same way.
  • A general education curriculum with many points of entry for faculty will also be one that improves choices and serves our students well.

Any ideas or comments?

Final Report from Ad Hoc Committee For Curriculum Review

May 2nd, 2015

The following documents constitute the final report for the ad hoc Curriculum Review committee which was created by the faculty in Fall 2014. The recommendations of the committee (formation of a curriculum revision committee to conduct a major revision of the general education curriculum over the next two years) were approved in faculty meeting on April 29, 2015.

Ad Hoc Admissions Committee

Minutes 4-23-15

Present – Martee Holt, Steve Shapiro, Wenling  Wang, Heather Hayton, Tom Guthrie, Barb Boyette, and Kami Rowan

The committee worked to create an outline of a draft document for Clerk’s Committee. This document will both report on an assessment of our work thus far, and recommendations for future.

This committee has an option to extend this committee for an additional year.  Thus, also included in our report will be a request for the ad hoc committee to continue until a permanent/official Enrollment Committee is created.

Beginning draft of Enrollment Committee Charge

This committee will function as a liaison between faculty and Enrollment Management, with special attention to recruitment, enrollment and persistence. Committee membership will consist of 5-6 faculty members with a high degree of divisional representation, VP of Enrollment, and any of his/her designee.

Main points to include:

  • Facilitate communication between faculty and Enrollment
  • Support Enrollment and help coordinate faculty contributions to recruitment and retention efforts
  • Sharing recent trends in prospective student audience with our academic colleagues
  • Creating a shared vision of expectations for incoming Guilford students
  • Help to name/communicate distinctive and compelling academic programs and initiatives.

Communicate to Enrollment what we’re doing and to faculty what people want

Policy changes for honor code violations

May 1st, 2015

Clerk’s approved a minor policy change for honor code violations. Clerk’s felt this change did not need faculty meeting time for discussion. The policy has been posted to the Beacon for review as described in the handbook. If you have questions or wish to lodge a request for discussion of the policy change (within 30 days), please contact me at .

The policy change is here: Beacon article
